"ISABEL ALLENDE DESERVED AWARD? HOW

(published in the weekly "Time 21" Temuco)

This Thursday, September 2 will be remembered as the day for the fourth time with some 50 occasions, a woman won the National Book Award. Isabel Allende speak Llona (1942), author of 18 books, mainly novels (some more than expendable), characterized by a profusion of eroticism, humor and dizzying description of key historical realities in Latin American dream, where the unreal or weird not dissociate from the everyday. The prose, galloping, playful and "suspiciously entertaining "(say some intellectual) of the niece of former President Allende who for years worked as a journalist, he has sold more than 50 million books, making it the best-known Chilean writer in the world after Pablo Neruda, and enabling you the distribution of the film two of their best books: "The House of the Spirits and Of Love and Shadows."

Perhaps in strict terms of literary quality, writers such as Marin Germain Sessa (1934) or Diamela Eltit (1949) had more merit than the winning Allende, but in the current context of neo-illiteracy and poor dissemination of texts, these authors are almost ignored by the people, nor has the cognitive tools to dig into his prose. And in this I be very clear: is not here to reward the better known or more books to sell, but to vindicate the literature, which seems to be taken by the elites and submerged in a paradoxical marginality, which among other ills leads to overcrowding, as a tangible social reality as a form as widely as possible learning and world building, even in these times where the paradigm of knowledge (and entertainment) mutated from print to audiovisual, which is not we see as an inevitable fact.

Además, nadie en buena ley puede negar la calidad intrínseca de textos como “La casa de los espíritus” (su primer libro, publicado at 40 years and reviewed in some familiar key essential facets of social change in Chile), "Eva Luna" or "Paula", the poignant chronicle of the death of his daughter. Reading these and other texts, and the arguments outlined above, justify this award ... it also has a dramatic and fatal significance to justify such spurious outrage.

Indeed, some argue that the National Book Award is one of many literary superstitions of Chile. And if we look at the historiography of the topic and we see that even famous figures could constitute an alternative canon (Enrique Lihn, Juan Emar, Roberto Bolaño, Miguel Serrano, Juan Luis Martínez, Jorge Teillier, Bombal, Nicomedes Guzmán and Vicente Huidobro) did not receive the mentioned award and if they received other signifying nothing, we must address this important subject has a momentary avatars (political, advertising, etc.) and does not substantially modify the map of our literary and cultural imaginary. Map, in my view, already counts among its coordinates with an author as Isabel Allende, above all for his first book, "The House of the Spirits", written out of the applause and the agents, the Spartans and as often fertile rigors loneliness.
